What does it sound like when the many facets of life slowly become songs, stories, and artistic impressions? And how do you preserve creativity when the world around you changes, when everything feels new but at the same time familiar?
In the lecture ”Are you still singing?” Anne Dorte Michelsen invites the participants to explore the music behind the familiar melodies and into a life filled with both power, experience, humor, doubt, and artistic curiosity. Based on her memoir ”Do you still sing?”(August 2025) She shares her personal story of growing up, finding her way into music, breaking through and then finding new footing – as a woman, an artist and a human being.
It is a story about finding one’s own voice, even when the outside world tries to define it, and about daring to ask the big questions when life changes direction. With warmth, self-deprecation, humor, and her straightforward manner, Anne Dorte gives the audience both new perspectives and a sense of recognition. She shows how vulnerability and creativity often go hand in hand, and how it is precisely in those moments when one feels most vulnerable that it is possible to find new strength.
Anne Dorte Michelsen is known and loved for her many songs – both as a member and songwriter in the beloved folk orchestra Tøsedrengene, as part of the experimental vocal group ”Waiting for Dad”, and through her long and prolific solo career. Over the decades, her voice and lyrics have put words and music to emotions, generations, and moments that many have been able to reflect on.
But behind the great successes lies the story of being a woman in a tough and male-dominated industry, of standing alone, of the courage to renew oneself – and of finding a new voice in the midst of a life crisis. The participants in the lecture gain a unique insight into how her songs are created, how an idea or memory develops into music, and how life experience, language and honesty have given her art new depth.
Anne Dorte Michelsen studied journalism and is a trained scriptwriter; this combination of artistic sensitivity, linguistic precision and experience brings them vividly to life in her lectures. She manages to convey complex emotions and experiences in a clear, poetic and engaging language, where both seriousness and lightness find space.
In 2023, she was awarded the Danish Arts Foundation’s ”lifetime honorary award” as a recognition of her great significance for Danish art, music, and cultural heritage. Today, she also directs the DR radio program ”To vers og et omkvæd”, in which she once again demonstrates her ability to bring music, stories, and reflections closer to the listener.
